As for those of us who are followers of the path, we have over the past few years been facing difficult knots including the knot of the Kanrodai and that of the Shinbashira’s illness, all of which are urging us to ponder deeply. It seems to me that there is definitely an intention of God behind this global confusion caused by the novel coronavirus.

In light of the current situation, we should reflect on our past and examine where we have fallen short and, basing ourselves on that reflection, follow the path with fresh minds as if we were to start afresh.

As we look at our churches and reflect on our faith, we should ask ourselves whether or not our practice of faith, which we believed to be appropriate, was indeed so. We might have forgotten something important. I think there are many things to reflect on. We must firmly grasp the current state of the path and begin performing our tasks with a strong sense of urgency as if the entire Tenrikyo community is making a fresh start in unity of mind.

—What exactly are your thoughts on the fresh start?

In the path, we are taught by Oyasama “to save others.” The path by which we implement that instruction is the path of single-hearted salvation, which is the path we should follow. This point has not changed and will not change in the future. However, I think the opportunities to engage in salvation work are decreasing now. It is important to create more opportunities to help save others. In order to do so, it is crucial to increase the number of people who can engage in salvation work. There are many people in this world who are in difficult situations, who are sick and helpless, and who are suffering. It is important to pay close attention to these people as we carry out our tasks.

As for a time frame, I recently mentioned that as we move toward the 150th Anniversary of Oyasama, which will be observed in 15 years, we should each consider what we would like to achieve and make efforts to accomplish that. These efforts also must be done with the focus on salvation work.

—When people hear “15 years from now,” some of them may feel that they are not involved. What do you think of this point?

I understand that very well. Since I am getting old, too, I am not sure if I will be healthy enough to work in 15 years. However, how we will be in the future is not important. The important thing is how the churches entrusted to us will be in 15 years. What I am asking everyone to do here is to think about and envision what we would like our churches to look like in 15 years. Setting our sights on realizing the future that we envision, we need to exert our utmost efforts over the next 15 years.

I also would like church head ministers to share that future vision of their churches with their family members and followers so that they can aim at and work toward the same goal in high spirits. Taking a leadership role in this regard is an important task of church head ministers.

(continued on the next page)

—Can you explain the idea of setting our sights on Oyasama’s anniversaries?

Oyasama said, “I shall save the world from now,” when She withdrew from physical life in 1887. Oyasama always gives us the courage to follow the path of single-hearted salvation. Thus, we should regard Her anniversaries as significant as the knot of 1887 and concentrate on performing our tasks so that we can live up to Oyasama’s expectations in the season of the anniversaries.

Events such as the installation of new church head ministers and the anniversaries of churches are among the milestones for individual churches whereas Oyasama’s anniversaries are ones that we share in the entire Tenrikyo community. That is to say, the anniversaries are very precious opportunities for us to bring ourselves together and encourage one another to follow the path by receiving the blessings of the season.

—As we make a fresh start, you have emphasized “single-hearted salvation.” Regarding this, you presented the following three key areas of focus to the head ministers of directly supervised churches and the superintendents of dioceses in January this year:

Salvation activities that reach out to those in need of help by:

○ providing support to people in difficult situations

○ helping others in the spirit of hinokishin to contribute to society

Learning the teachings

Nurturing followers with care

Can you elaborate on these key areas of focus?

Earlier, I mentioned the 150th Anniversary of Oyasama as a time frame for our endeavors. Before that anniversary, we will observe the 140th Anniversary of Oyasama in five years. This means that we are to begin the “three years, one thousand days” pre-anniversary season two years from now. I would like all churches to spend these two years thinking about and concretely envisioning their future 15 years hence so that they can bring about what they envision through their committed efforts in salvation activities. For this reason, I set out the three key areas of focus to encourage all head ministers and all our churches to engage in salvation work in a concrete way that would help them realize their vision.

—What precisely does the first area of focus—“Salvation activities that reach out to those in need of help”—mean?

The “service” and the “Sazuke,” which were taught as important church activities, can only fulfill their purposes when we implement salvation work.

When we think about the current state of salvation work at churches, it is often the case that the target audience tends to be their Yoboku and followers. It goes without saying that this is an important part of salvation work at churches, which entails providing sincere attention and care. On top of this kind of salvation work, however, I would like you to focus on people in society who are yet unaware of the teaching and proactively make efforts to reach out to them. I must say that our performance has been lackluster when it comes to the salvation of those who have yet to embrace the faith.

Since its founding, Tenrikyo has been making progress by honestly reaching out to those who were suffering from difficulties of any kind. That is why I am emphasizing the importance of “reaching out to those in need of help” now and would like church head ministers to be clearly aware of this when implementing salvation work in a concrete manner.

(continued on the next page)

–There are two sub-goals in the first area of focus, which are “providing support to people in difficult situations” and “helping others in the spirit of hinokishin to contribute to society.” How did you come up with the idea of adding these sub-goals?

These two sub-goals are simply clues that may enable church head ministers to reach out to the people who need to be saved. It does not mean that salvation work has to be done in these manners. Please do not mistake that.

Compared to the Showa era (1926–1989), the standard of living today has increased dramatically. What we desire in life has changed as well. Because of the improvement of medical and social security systems, it may seem to us that there are no more people seeking our help. In the past, many people would seek help from religions including Tenrikyo if they were in a difficult situation. Nowadays, there is a wide range of services available to address personal problems. More and more efforts are being made by the government, as well as medical and welfare service providers, to work together to reach out to those who are suffering. Given the current state of society, I believe that if we can work with such organizations, we will be able to have contact with people in difficult situations.

Despite the improvement of medical and social systems, there are still many people who suffer from illnesses and other problems and cannot see their future. This is no different from the past. I think there are many cases where only Tenrikyo churches can help save people.

The term “people in difficult situations” here means people in need in general, not only those who are suffering from illnesses or other troubles, but also those who are in social or economic difficulties and need support. The idea is to explore ways to seek out people around our churches who are in such situations.

At the same time, people in general are now very interested in and very active in volunteer and welfare activities. I think we should think about how head ministers and Yoboku can be actively involved in such a circle of help and support in society. I understand that some people think that welfare and volunteer activities are different from salvation and hinokishin activities. However, I am afraid that we have become so caught up in the concept of words that we have not been able to join the circle of help and support that has been established in our society.

—Based on what you have just said, one might ask whether we will be focusing on welfare activities in the future. What are your thoughts on this point?

I understand what you are saying, but I think that is a completely different issue. What I am talking about is getting involved in society and the local community to gain opportunities to do salvation work. I am saying this in the sense that we should actively seek contact with people in need.

However, we should not allow welfare activities to undermine or put off the church activities we should be doing or to detract from the function of the church as a place of salvation. Our salvation work can only be accomplished through our efforts in seeking God’s blessings in all respects. I need to convey this point in a way that will not give rise to any misunderstanding. Our salvation activities are to convey the teachings through performing the “service,” administering the “Sazuke,” and talking about the teachings single-heartedly, to ask for God’s blessings, and to guide people to the path of salvation. There should be no misunderstanding. The key to getting in touch with people who are looking for salvation is to take action. We should not just wait for an opportunity to present itself.

The approach I am trying to promote here has the same aim as engaging in door-to-door missionary work or giving a roadside speech. In addition to the ways we have been doing things, I am encouraging us to be more proactive and specific in seeking out contact with people and increasing our opportunities to implement salvation work.

(continued on the next page)

—What does the other sub-goal—“helping others in the spirit of hinokishin to contribute to society”—mean?

For example, there are many followers who are actively engaged in cleaning activities around their churches and in their communities. There are also many who are fulfilling roles such as neighborhood council members, PTA members, probation officers, and religious counselors.

It goes without saying that hinokishin is any action that we perform with a sense of gratitude while taking an attitude of exerting our utmost with joy as The Doctrine of Tenrikyo says, “Hinokishin is an action arising from the joy of fervent faith and can take many forms.”

We as followers of the path have this attitude of hinokishin instilled in us. I believe that many followers who, through their attitude and acts of hinokishin, have earned the trust of their communities. Each community has its needs. When we are actively involved in addressing the local needs with this spirit, we can bring joy to people. We should actively build such momentum. From this angle, I think we can create more and more opportunities for salvation.

—You mean we can carry out church activities by “providing support to people in difficult situations” and by “helping others in the spirit of hinokishin to contribute to society”?

What we are doing as “salvation work” or “hinokishin” is seen as welfare activities or volunteer activities by the public. I think that is fine.

As I have said many times before, these are just some of the ways to create opportunities. What is important is how we can help others be saved, and this is what we want to focus on. First of all, I would like church head ministers to think concretely about what kind of opportunities they can find to help save others and how they want to engage in that salvation work.

—How can we get information about “those in need of help?”

In terms of creating opportunities for salvation work, I think such information is available from the Mission Department of Church Headquarters.

For example, there are networks related to “children’s cafeterias” and foster parent activities, whose momentum is currently growing. There are also networks of people who are developing various forms of salvation activities, so it would be a good idea to learn about them.

The local governments also have a system to support those who actually need assistance. However, since the efforts of the local governments alone are not sufficient to meet the needs of those in need, there is a need for the private sector to provide assistance. Other sources of information include social welfare councils and various NPOs that act as contact points for people in difficult situations. So one way is to visit these councils and NPOs—which can provide information about people who are in difficulties and about the kind of help needed—as well as to offer cooperation to the local government so that we can gain the trust of the community before starting salvation work.

—Are you suggesting that each church should seek various forms of contact with people who need to be saved?

In Tenrikyo, we have the wonderful groundwork that has been laid over the years. The “attitude of hinokishin,” which I mentioned earlier, has led to Tenrikyo gaining the trust of the local community, and the “Disaster Relief Hinokishin Corps,” which has earned a high reputation from the public in recent years, has been able to fulfill its roles because of the teachings of Oyasama and the groundwork in salvation and hinokishin activities. I believe that we ourselves must be well aware of these facts. I think it is important for us to have confidence, think about what kind of salvation work we can do, and work proactively and concretely at each church.

—We should recognize the potential strength of the path, look for ways to help those in need, and proactively work to make our churches places of salvation, shouldn’t we?

We have the path we have today because our predecessors have earnestly and diligently engaged in salvation work over a long time. I still hear people say things like, “Tenrikyo accepts all people and takes care of them with kindness,” “Tenrikyo helps people without asking for anything in return,” and “Tenrikyo is known for hinokishin.” However, the honest truth is that such attitudes among us are becoming less and less prevalent. I am sure that there are many reasons for this. One reason is that perhaps not much salvation work is being done, and we are not spirited enough to help save others. I feel that this kind of atmosphere is creating a situation that is hindering the development of faith among today’s young people. I believe that by revitalizing the momentum of salvation work and by showing more and more spiritedness in hinokishin activities, we will be able to create a foundation for young people to seek the faith and grow spiritually.

(continued on the next page)

—What are your thoughts on the second key area of focus, “Learning the teachings”?

First of all, what we base ourselves on and what we convey in the work of salvation are Oyasama’s teachings and Her Divine Model. We have the teachings of Oyasama and Her Divine Model, which are absolutely without error. It is because of them that we can stand firm and that we are able to help save those who are at their wits’ end or feeling lost in their lives. This is the strongest point of the path.

Because our foundation—which is based on the teachings and Oyasama’s Divine Model—is solid, there is no room for error. It goes without saying that it is necessary for church head ministers themselves to learn and internalize the teachings and make an effort to put them into practice on a daily basis.

I try to imagine what it would have been like if I had been there when Oyasama was physically present and working for us. Also, what would Oyasama say to me if She saw what I am doing now? I think about these things and consider what I need to do.

Since it is God the Parent who saves us, it is only through the workings of God the Parent that we can receive the blessings. Our salvation work cannot be accomplished without the workings of God the Parent, who accepts our true sincerity and works for us according to the state of mind, not according to our wishes.

Whether we can have God the Parent work for us depends entirely on how thoroughly we are performing our tasks. We must not make mistakes in this regard. I believe that it is only by receiving God’s blessings that our churches will shine more brightly.

For this reason, it is important for us to reevaluate how well we have learned the teachings. We must deepen our faith as we age, so it is not enough to remain in the mindset of our youth. However, there are times when we are overconfident that we know what we are doing, and we do not realize that we are conveying the teachings in the wrong way. I think there is nothing more frightening than that kind of unconscious confidence. I would like church head ministers to be strict with themselves about always having a humble mind and attitude in seeking the teachings of God the Parent.

We need to check from time to time to make sure that we have not developed our own self-interested understanding of the teachings, or that we have not stretched the interpretation of the teachings.

—I know it is not easy to convey the teachings to others, but what should a church head minister be careful about?

This is related to the next point, “Nurturing followers with care.” I think that church head ministers are conveying the teachings to others less frequently than in the past. It seems that they often do not convey the teachings even when administering the Sazuke to those suffering from illness.

There is another important consideration. When we deliver a sermon or a talk, do we find ourselves saying what we want to say without considering the listeners’ level of understanding or spiritual growth? It is an important role of church head ministers to convey the truth and the teachings, but it requires effort and ingenuity to communicate effectively. We need to make an effort and devise ways to communicate, using words and attitudes that will allow understanding to come to others. It is important to make a sustained effort to learn such things in our daily lives.

(continued on the next page)

—What about the third key area of focus, “Nurturing followers with care”?

We need to rethink the concept of nurturing and put more mind and energy into it. Right now, I think we really lack the “capacity to nurture.”

Are we not trying to nurture all Yoboku and followers in the same way? Or, are we not expecting them to play the same role in a church? For example, at a church’s monthly service, followers who do not play a role in its performance are of course welcome to come and worship. However, the question is whether there is an atmosphere in the church that makes it easy for such people to do so. It will be good if they can gradually come into contact with the teachings of the path, deepen their faith, make the practice of the faith part of their lives, and become a service performer. However, I think that our desire to have them become service performers has become too strong in some aspects.

If we have a preconceived idea of how nurturing should be or how Yoboku should be nurtured, we may end up losing sight of what is really necessary for their spiritual growth. Everyone’s situation is different. People are different for example in terms of age, gender, reasons for coming to the faith, health conditions, and whether they live near our churches or come from far away.

The most important thing is to take a personal approach to and try to understand each follower’s situation. By doing so, we can build a relationship of mutual trust, which can create a situation where they can consult with us about their problems.

—Regarding those who live far away from their churches, do you have any ideas on how we can nurture them?

Many Yoboku live far away from their churches, as people move more frequently than in the past. Even church head ministers’ children might be in such a situation. So of course, it is important for us to reach out to these people through letters, emails, and other means of communication, as well as visit them at their homes to nurture them. However, distance is not always an easy thing to deal with. One possible approach is to encourage those followers to visit any church in the area where they live and connect their hearts to God. It would be good and necessary in this day and age to use such means to help people live a life based on the faith, in which they can feel close to God.

(continued on the next page)

—Is there anything else you would like to share about nurturing?

From the point of view of creating contact with people in need, I mentioned that it would be fine to utilize such things as the social welfare system, but there is a clear difference between the goal of welfare activities and the goal of our salvation work.

I believe that welfare activities aim to help people get out of their immediate difficulties, reintegrate into society, and become independent. Our salvation work may begin in the same manner, which is to say, by making efforts to help sufferers get rid of their immediate difficulties, pain, worries, and sufferings. However, we are doing so believing that this will help them embark on the path to true salvation.

Through these efforts, we try to help people understand God the Parent’s guidance that lies at the root of their difficulties. Our salvation work entails helping people sweep away the dust of the mind to achieve salvation of the mind and further encouraging them to become aware of the causality that lies deep within their problems so that they can start making efforts to cancel their causality. In this manner, we pray and work for the salvation of not only those sufferers but also their children, grandchildren, and so forth. Since our salvation work is so extensive, it is essential for those of us engaging in salvation work to be thoughtful and painstaking in our approach to nurturing. This is not something that can be accomplished overnight, so we may need to continue our efforts in this regard for years.

Oyasama made painstaking efforts to teach and guide followers, using every possible means, including through Her spoken words, Her written words, and Her everyday actions. Since this Divine Model is what we need to emulate, we must become more considerate and thoughtful of those in need of salvation and put a great deal of effort into nurturing them by paying close attention to them and engaging in salvation work at the best moment for them.

—I see. In order to help save the mind of others, we first need to settle the teachings firmly in our minds. We then should thoughtfully nurture and guide them while walking the path with them until they are truly saved.

Lastly, is there anything you would like church head ministers to keep in mind?

There are many things, but what I would like church head ministers to keep in mind in particular is the importance of being connected to Jiba in terms of their position and role as a church head minister. I believe that the role a church head minister is expected to play is different from that of an ordinary Yoboku or follower.

What does it mean for church head ministers to connect their hearts to Jiba? Yoboku and followers receive the truth of Jiba and blessings through their local churches. Therefore, church head ministers must be the conduit through which the truth of Jiba flows. This is the role of a church head minister. That is why church head ministers must dedicate their utmost sincerity to Jiba and have a strong spirit of contribution and dedication. This is something that church head ministers should keep in mind. I also hope that this awareness will be further strengthened through their respective church affiliation.

A Divine Direction teaches us:

The truth of Church Headquarters and the truth of the churches: these are a single breath. Unless you settle this unity in mind, Heaven cannot work.

Osashizu, December 13, 1906

This means that Jiba and churches are connected as a single breath and that God the Parent will surely work for us if our churches work in unison with Jiba. This is a vital point from the perspective of receiving the blessings of God the Parent through our churches, and thus this is the most important point that all church head ministers must keep in mind.

I am sure that church head ministers have many concerns. However, I would like them to perform their tasks with confidence without needlessly being self-deprecating about or belittling their churches even if they feel that their current efforts are not sufficient. If head ministers feel that their work does not measure up, they just need to increase their efforts from now on.

My hope is that all churches will shine more brightly in their respective local communities and become training centers for salvation. I would like all church head ministers to envision a concrete future 15 years from now and do their best in high spirits to bring about that future so that they can make progress toward that goal.

As a sequel to his talk on the future course of the path delivered on August 27, 2020, Rev.
